Civic Engagement Paper Topics - Can You Get Rich From Participating in Civic Engagement
Civic Engagement Paper Topics - Can You Get Rich From Participating in Civic Engagement?Civic engagement is an integral part of academic freedom is something we should all hold dear. However, civic engagement can sometimes be overused. A major problem is the excessive use of the term civic engagement to promote other agendas. However, for people in the academic community, civic engagement means different things to different people. In a recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Katharine R. Mikkelson suggests that too much civic engagement in academe can be counterproductive. On the other hand, Jenny R. Mace thinks that when people in academe are too involved in civic engagements, it distracts them from academic work.I think it is important to point out that not everyone is best suited to engaging in civic engagement and others may have different concerns. For example, some people are already engaged in civic affairs and so they may find engaging in academic activity tireso me. But most academic workers I know are already engaged in civic activities, so I think the answer to the question 'what should academics do' is 'think about it'.The trick is to bring people who are interested in civic engagement into the academic world, because this is the place where they belong. Even academics who aren't engaged in civic engagement will benefit from knowing more about civic issues. So what do academics need to do? Simply, take the time to engage in civic engagement. There are two major reasons why academics should consider engaging in civic engagement. The first reason is that engagement is a way to connect with others and build relationships. An academic may be surprised to learn that if they are engaged in civic engagement, it actually creates relationships. This is important, because it helps an academic to identify with others.Secondly, being in contact with others on a regular basis provides an academic with a sense of perspective and purpose in the academic process. An academic will always be in a minority when he or she is not actively involved in the academic community. In addition, he or she will also always be trying to participate in a way that is respectful of the academic mission.I encourage academics to take the time to take part in civic engagement activities that involve networking with others. I know that it can be difficult to deal with things in a normal academic environment, but having this sense of perspective and purpose through the lens of civic engagement is an essential part of the academic process.I hope you will consider this and use civic engagement as a way to get connected with others in the academic community. Whether you are just curious about how others are engaged in civic engagement or you have something important to contribute, I encourage you to give it a try. Just keep in mind that you should engage in civic engagement only for a limited time frame, and that you shouldn't expect to get rich off of this activity.
